This new model from the Ferrari workshops takes up the concept of the Maranello. A strict two-seater coupé with a long bonnet and a mid-mounted front engine. Fitted with a latest-generation semi-automatic gearbox with steering wheel-mounted gearshift, it allows you to change gear in just 150 milliseconds. The Fiorano is also equipped with the Manineto made famous by the F430. Aesthetically, its lines have been dictated by the quest for performance. For example, as well as being sublime, the roof pillars’ side wings generate 50 kg of downforce at high speed! On the road, the Fiorano has a dual personality. In ‘normal’ driving conditions, it proves to be well behaved and relatively protective of your lumbar vertebrae. As soon as you pick up the pace, it becomes a demon. Its lively handling and ultra-precise steering are ideal for exploiting the full potential of its engine. Powerful braking and a stable rear axle give you the confidence to attack!

Initially, there were no real plans for series production of the Pininfarina Sergio concept unveiled almost two years ago at the Geneva Motor Show. The decision to produce this rather special creation, extrapolated from a 458 Spider, has finally been confirmed. Admittedly, the radical open-top spirit of the Sergio concept (a tribute to the son of Pininfarina founder Gian-Battista) has faded somewhat, replaced by a much more conventional targa-style architecture. The proportions of the 458 Spider are retained, but dressed up in reference to the 1965 Dino Berlinetta Speciale concept. It inherits the V8 engine from the 458 Speciale… the 4.5-litre engine increased to 605 bhp. At the stern, the positioning of the two tailpipes is a clear indication of the connection with the 458 Speciale Aperta. As with all Ferrari’s ultra-exclusive creations, the price largely depends on the configuration chosen. The Sergio, finished in Maranello’s Tailor Made personalisation department, is said to cost around €3 million. The first example will be housed in the SBH Royal Auto Gallery, a private collection belonging to the royal family of the United Arab Emirates.

The new 458 Speciale A (A as in Aperta) limited edition special series is a tribute to the success of the various versions of the 458, a model that has received numerous awards from the international motoring media and won numerous victories in motor racing, including a double WEC title and class wins in classic races such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring. Visually, the Speciale was already particularly extroverted in closed body form, with its gills and active aerodynamic panoply on a red body with a blue and white central stripe. The Speciale Aperta takes up the latter but applies it to a yellow livery dotted with blue, right down to the carbon trim in the cabin.

At Ferrari, there are always beasts with claws of varying degrees of sharpness. The Speciale, like the 360 Modena and F430 before it, is a genuine racing car that has just been adapted for the road. Ferrari has drawn on all its racing experience to make this 458 a very… special car. Respect for the fundamentals, first and foremost, starting with a radical reduction in weight. By cutting back on everything from soundproofing to certain mechanical parts and bodywork, 90 kilos have been saved. Rated at 1,290 kg dry, the Speciale weighs just under 1,400 kg when fully loaded and in running order. Less weight, but more horsepower, of course. We know the recipe! The other ingredients of the transformation, essentially electronic, are more sophisticated and refined. This is an area in which Ferrari excels. Such is the case with the active aerodynamics which, thanks to mobile flaps at the front and rear, defines the ideal compromise between penetration coefficient and downforce, depending on speed and conditions of use. All without the need for a large rear spoiler. Or the dual-clutch robotised gearbox, whose shift times have been further shortened, by 20% for upshifts and 44% for downshifts. There’s also a magnetic-controlled damper, recalibrated for even better roll control.

Like its predecessors, the 458 saloon is available in an open version. But, in keeping with its originality, it swaps the soft top for a retractable hard top, making this Spider a veritable coupé-cabriolet. With the engine in a central rear position, there was little room for manoeuvre, so a system inspired by that of the Superamerica was chosen. Controlled electrically, the roof pivots on its rear axis to lie flat under a bonnet that includes the two large bosses that extend the headrests. The system is simple, light and space-saving. It has just one drawback: it no longer allows you to admire the superb red cylinder heads of the V8 through a transparent bubble, as you do on the saloon. What the eyes lose, the ears gain back, however, since in addition to the pleasure of hearing the exhaust express itself more freely, the new scoops in the bonnet for cooling provide a more present intake sound.

No new sports car, no matter how powerful or desirable, can match the love affair with a new Ferrari. The company behind the prancing horse always creates a stir when it unveils its latest creation, and even more so when it takes over from a car as accomplished as the F430. The 458 Italia sports a more aggressive look that exudes competition in every curve. Menacing eyes, a wide mouth ready to devour the track, a profile carved by the wind and a stern inspired by the Enzo – all the ingredients are there to make it an icon. The F40-style triple tailpipe adds the finishing touch to this masterpiece. Inside, the perceived quality seems to have improved still further, with the dashboard turned more towards the driver, who has access to all the controls from the steering wheel. Carbon bucket seats, steering wheel paddles cut from the same material, instrumentation mixing analogue and digital, the racing atmosphere is guaranteed.

Ferrari made very few changes to its look, with the headlights losing their almond shape and stretching vertically in a pear shape. The grille is less oval and the air intakes are larger. The bonnet has been modified with the appearance of two gills. The gills also deepen laterally. The big change for this 2014 California is the return of the turbo engine. This is the first time since the 1987 F40 that the Italians have incorporated an engine of this style. The block is a 3.8-litre V8 inaugurated by the Maserati Quattroporte and Ghibli. The turbocharger increases power to 560bhp at 7,500rpm, compared with 490bhp at 4,750rpm for the previous naturally-aspirated 4.3-litre V8.

The California, now the oldest car in the Ferrari range, was beginning to look a little older. In terms of styling, the 2012 California makes do with a few subtle changes, with a silver grille being the most important exterior modification. The most important changes are invisible at first glance. The naturally-aspirated 4.3-litre V8 has a revised electronic mapping and a modified exhaust system, and gains 30bhp to reach a maximum output of 490bhp and 505Nm of torque. As for the chassis, the engineers wanted to save a few kilos, 30 in all compared with the previous model. This will save two tenths of a second when accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h, which takes just 3.8 seconds. Ferrari will also be offering the ‘Handling Speciale’ package as an option, allowing even better performance by adjusting the suspension and damping.

A distant descendant of the 1957 Spyder 250 GT California, the all-new Ferrari California follows on from the 2005 Superamerica. This retractable hardtop coupé cabriolet, designed by Pininfarina, has an elegant, dynamic look and was developed on the Maranello race track by Michael Schumacher himself. It will be recognisable, among other things, by the three gills that adorn its flanks and the body-line indentation that marks the rear of the doors. The new Ferrari is powered by a 4.3-litre V8 engine placed in a novel front mid-engine position. Another new feature is the 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which should make the California a pleasure to drive.

After the astonishing F430 Scuderia, Ferrari is taking advantage of its 16th Formula 1 manufacturer’s title to extend the concept to the Spider. The magic formula of boosting the engine and reducing the weight has been repeated for this limited edition of 499 cars. It’s hard to imagine a better way to combine the pleasure of the V8’s wind-in-your-hair vocals with the performance claims of a supercar. Versatile and relatively easy to handle compared to the brand’s former glories, it allows anyone to put one foot in Ferrari’s prestige without putting the other in the grave. A genuine dream car…
